DC’s newest Superman movie is going up, up, and away at the box office. The James Gunn directed film has been critically praised since its release and several Hollywood brands have unearthed how much the breakout stars have earned.
The new addition to the DC Universe had an opening at $122M domestically and $217M globally, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Though the estimated earnings are pretty low compared to other superhero movies, it’s close to breaking even since the movie cost $225 million to produce before marketing, is their inaugural release.
Nonetheless, the release marks a new era for DC according to Warner Bros after director James Gunn was appointed co-chair and co-CEO of DC Studios. Warner Bros. CEO David Zaslav praised the new direction. “This weekend, we watched Superman soar as James Gunn’s passion and vision came to life on the big screen. Superman is just the first step,” he said in a statement. “Over the next year alone, DC Studios will introduce the films Supergirl and Clayface in theaters and the series Lanterns on HBO Max, all part of a bold ten-year plan. The DC vision is clear, the momentum is real, and I couldn’t be more excited for what’s ahead.”
Alongside David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, and Nicholas Hoult, the Superman cast includes Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Beck Bennett as Steve Lombard, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho and Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific.
The titular role of Superman belongs to David Corenswet, but the breakout star only received $750,000 according to Variety. However, due to the box office boom from the film, he’s likely to get a hefty for the film.
Corenswet currently has a net worth of $4 million, according to Celebrity Net Worth, thanks to his small roles in Twisters and Pearl.
Rachel Brosnahan also received a salary of $750,000, according to Variety. Although she’s an established TV actress, Puck reports that she still received a lowball salary because she hasn’t really broken through on the big screen. However, like Corwenset, she could get a large salary bonus.
She does have the highest net worth of the cast at an eye-watering $25 million, thanks to her role as the titular character in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.
Nicholas Hoult received the highest salary of the cast, receiving $2 million for his role as the villain Lex Luthor. Many people cited his wide range of roles for the reason he received a pay boost compared to his fellow cast members.
His breakout role was playing Tony in the UK hit series Skins and later gained prominence in roles in films like X-Men: First Class, The Menu, The Favourite and more. He has a net worth of around $8 million according to Celebrity Net Worth.
Although he isn’t a cast member, James Gunn received a hefty paycheck from Warner Bros. of $15 million. The salary is reportedly in addition to Gunn’s seven-figure salary as co-CEO of DC Studios.
